(Decision of the Italian Data Protection Authority of 8 May 2014, published in Official Gazette no. 126 of 3 June 2014, implementing Directive 2002/58/EC)
Cookies are small text strings that the websites visited by the user send to their device (usually to the browser), where they are stored and then sent back to the same websites on the user’s next visit. Besides cookies, the Authority’s decision also applies to other similar tools (web beacons/web bugs, clear GIFs or others) that allow the user or the device to be identified.
While browsing a website, the user may also receive on their device cookies sent by different websites or web servers (so-called “third parties”), which may host some of the elements (for example images, maps, sounds or specific links to pages on other domains) present on the website being visited.
Cookies, usually present in very large numbers in users’ browsers and sometimes with a long lifespan, are used for different purposes: carrying out computer authentication, monitoring sessions, storing information on specific configurations of the users accessing the server, etc. More information on cookies is available at www.allaboutcookies.org.
In order to regulate these tools correctly, they need to be distinguished, since there are no technical features that set them apart from one another other than the purposes pursued by those who use them. The legislator has moved in this direction too: implementing Directive 2009/136/EC, it made the user’s prior informed consent mandatory for the installation of cookies used for purposes other than purely technical ones (see art. 1(5)(a) of Legislative Decree no. 69 of 28 May 2012, which amended art. 122 of the Privacy Code).
More information on the cookies used
When you visit this website, “first-party cookies” (generated and used by this website) and “third-party cookies” (generated on this website by third parties) may be placed on your computer or other device. Please note that disabling some cookies may limit your ability to use the website and prevent you from fully enjoying its features and services. To help you decide which cookies to accept and which to refuse, a description of the cookies used is given below.
Types of cookies
| Browsing cookies | These cookies ensure normal browsing and use of the website and enable the connection between the server and the user’s browser. They allow the website to work properly and display content on the device used. Without these cookies, some requested features, such as logging in to the website or creating an online shopping cart, might not be available. Browsing cookies are technical cookies and are necessary for the website to work. |
| Functional cookies | These cookies are stored on the computer or other device and, at the user’s request, record the user’s choices so that they can be remembered in order to optimise and provide improved, personalised browsing within the service or when accessing this website (e.g. saving a password in reserved areas, saving products in the cart so that they can be found again in the next session, saving the selected language, watching a video or commenting on the blog, etc.). Functional cookies are not essential for the website to work, but they improve the quality and experience of browsing. |
| Analytics cookies | These cookies collect information on how the user uses the website, such as which pages are visited most often. This website uses the third-party cookies of “Google Analytics”, a statistical analysis service provided and managed by Google that makes it possible to analyse anonymously how users visit the website. The information generated by the cookie about the user’s use of the website (including the IP address) is transmitted to and stored on Google’s servers. Useful links to better understand Google Analytics’ privacy policy: https://www.google.com/analytics/terms/ – https://policies.google.com/privacy. Analytics cookies are not essential for the website to work. |
| Flash cookies | In some circumstances this website may use Adobe Flash Player to deliver certain content, such as video clips or animations. Flash cookies are stored on the user’s device but are managed through an interface different from the one provided by the browser. This means that Flash cookies cannot be managed through the browser: you need to use the Flash management tools directly from the Adobe website (www.adobe.com), which provides comprehensive information on how to delete or disable Flash cookies. For more information see http://www.adobe.com/security/flashplayer. This type of cookie is not essential for the website to work, but if it is disabled or refused the user may not be able to access some of the content on the website. |
Please note that the user can also express their choices on the use of the cookies on the website (see the detailed list under “Types of cookies” above) through their browser settings, following the instructions below. The user can also use “private browsing”, which allows them to browse the Internet without saving any information on the websites and pages visited, any passwords entered or other parameters.
